Highly recommend ...., 2009-09-17 this 'pre-Callahagn' winner. An AZ sheriff is taken out of his comfort zone to retrieve a bad guy now in the Big city ( NYC ). Lots of interesting twists and turns in a decent storyline. You can pretty much count on Clint for a quality movie. No money wasted here.
Pre-Dirty Harry takes on New York, 2009-03-26 Before Dirty Harry took the country by storm in 1971, Clint Eastwood played a similar character with the same director, Don Siegel, in 1968. Piute county deputy sheriff Walt Coogan out of Arizona is good at what he does, but in the process usually makes a lot of people angry. After one incident, Coogan is sent to New York City to bring back a prisoner, Jim Ringerman, for trial. Fed up with city police and their procedures, Coogan bluffs his way into getting his prisoner out, only to have him escape as they try to leave. With the NY police on his tail now for losing a prisoner, Coogan must do whatever he can to get him back. Siegel was and is known for his gritty movies with strong leads, and this one definitely fits that category. Stylized but gritty, it's an entertaining movie with two great action scenes, a fistfight in a pool hall and a motorcycle chase, both of which are helped by Eastwood doing many of his own stunts. A definite must-see for fans of Eastwood or the Dirty Harry series.
Almost like a tryout for Harry Callahan, Eastwood stars as Deputy Sheriff Walt Coogan, a no-nonsense country peace officer out of his element in NY. He might not know all the niceties of the job, but he'll get it done. Lee J. Cobb plays Lt. McElroy, the NY police officer who tangles with Coogan about his methods. Susan Clark plays Julie Roth, a probation officer Coogan meets and takes a keen interest in. Don Stroud, who would later play a rival of Eastwood's in Joe Kidd, is good in a small part as Jim Ringerman, a prisoner Coogan must bring back to Arizona for an unidentified crime. Tisha Sterling and James Edward also have memorable characters as Linny Raven, Ringerman's hopped up girlfriend, and Sgt. Wallace, a stakeout cop.
The DVD is a good price but don't expect much. The widescreen presentation of the movie looks good, but that's it on the disc. No special features, not even a trailer. It's a good movie though and one that Eastwood fans will surely enjoy. Check out Coogan's Bluff!
A bumbling pre-Dirty Harry, 2009-02-02 Coogan's search and apprehension of the miscreant Ringerman (Don Stroud) from Arizona to New York City is at times comical. Deputy Sheriff Coogan seems to have little scruples doing his job; lacks finesse, patience, social graces and is a bit misogynistic. But then again he is "rough around the edges" - and I do mean rough. He treats his prisoner (Ringerman) and any "accessory" like a disgruntled UPS package handler.
Susan Clark as Julie Roth tries to even out those rough edges, but to no avail. Coogan gets his man, but not after leaving New York like "Jaws" left Quint's boat in the final act of that movie. Okay, maybe not that bad. Don Stroud did a great job as the fugitive scumbag, Ringerman.
Coogan's Bluff, 2008-12-17 Unlike his 'Dirty Harry' movies, Clint Eastwood plays a more laid back cool Deputy Sheriff here displaying a toughness and resilience that draws respect from the New York police. Relentlessly hunting a convict on the run, Coogan never lets the objective of his visit from Arizona weaken as he comes up against some wierd and tough characters. He gets his man after a thrilling chase but the visit to the Big Apple does after all soften him a bit. A great watch with some excellent dialogue between the city slickers and this man from the outback.
Clint and Don, 2008-12-02 The first of many collaborations between Clint Eastwood and Don Siegel, this, Eastwood's second film after the Dollars trilogy, has him as an Arizona Deputy Sheriff sent to NYC to bring back a wanted criminal. The fish out of water scenario as Coogan (dressed in stetson and cowboy boots) confronts the pecularities of the Big Apple. Susan Clark as the romantic interest, Lee J. Cobb as Lt McElroy, Don Stroud as Ringerman (the wanted criminal), Tisha Sterling (daughter of Robert Sterling) as his drugged out girlfriend. Look out for David Doyle (Bosley on Charlie's Angels) and in the "Pigeon Foot Orange Peel" long time Eastwood friend actor Albert Popwell (bank robber in DIRTY HARRY, pimp with Draino in MAGNUM FORCE, Big Ed Mustafha in THE ENFORCER and Callahan's buddy Horace in SUDDEN IMPACT). Nice score by Lalo Schifrin.
