Footnotes in movie books are likely to reduce this swashbuckling adventure down to a simple description: it was the first movie to star Leonardo DiCaprio after the phenomenal success of Titanic. As such it automatically attracted a box-office stampede of Leo's young female fans, but critical reaction was deservedly mixed. Having earned his directorial debut after writing the Oscar-winning script for Mel Gibson's Braveheart, Randall Wallace wrote and directed this ambitious version of the often-filmed classic novel by Alexandre Dumas. DiCaprio plays dual roles as the despotic King Louis XIV, who rules France with an iron fist, and the king's twin brother, Philippe, who languishes in prison under an iron mask, his identity concealed to prevent an overthrow of Louis' throne. But Louis' abuse of power ultimately enrages Athos (John Malkovich), one of the original Four Musketeers, who recruits his former partners (Gabriel Byrne, Gérard Depardieu, and Jeremy Irons) in a plot to liberate Philippe and install him as the king's identical replacement. Once this plot is set in motion and the Musketeers are each given moments in the spotlight, the film kicks into gear and offers plenty of entertainment in the grand style of vintage swashbucklers. But it's also sidetracked by excessive length and disposable subplots, and for all his post-Titanic star power, the boyish DiCaprio just isn't yet "man" enough to be fully convincing in his title role. Still, this is an entertaining movie, no less enjoyable for falling short of the greatness to which it aspired. --Jeff Shannon

We really enjoyed this movie as it stays pretty true to the original story. Leonardo DiCaprio does a super job, as do all the other actors. Just great.

Leonard DiCaprio carries off his role in Aviator with aplomb. As for his role in the Man in the Iron Mask he's a bomb.

A King of France with an almost squeaky voice? Shouldn't have accepted the script Leonard, you did better as "The Kid" in"The Quick and the Dead" and that wasn't completely believable, but then neither were Hackman, or Stone, both too over blown.

Back to "Iron Mask" the whole thing seem too contrived. Russell Crowe, the Preacher who swore off killing gunning down his opponents, for Pete's sake take the bullet Russell you'll still get paid.

The Iron Mask needed somebody who could be suave and nasty as all get out, and young sir, you didn't have the chops for either of those qualities at the age you were when you made that film. Daniel Day Lewis, Alec Baldwin, or Tim Roth are names that pop into my mind who could be nasty and suave, that is to say perfidious enough to carry off the role.

I love this story. The cast is great. Great mix of action, drama with some key comedy points in it all. Leonardo has a great performance as he protrays two personalities quite opposite one another. The tension that builds and conspiracy that ensues is well worth the viewing of this excellent movie.

This is a movie with a overall solid feel - good acting, props, costumes, and a good story. Granted, King Louis having a twin and all of that is certainly a stretch of the imagination, but this story also includes the three Musketeers (albeit older now) so this is a nice movie with some creative twists taken with 17th-century French history and the original tale of the Musketeers. One thing I have really enjoyed in this film was the costumes, it's hard to not appreciate a movie that really pays attention to its costumes. Overall this is a really fun movie to watch.

Good movie, enjoyed it, liked characters. Appreciate that both dvd and blu-ray come in package saves having to carefully check package for which you have, wish more would do that. I do not have blu-ray, but find that I pick up package of it more often than not as it is featured most of the time in the stores.
