Editorial Review
Product Description
Stahl's Essential Psychopharmacology has established itself as the preeminent source of education and information in its field. This much expanded second edition enlists advances in neurobiology, and recent clinical developments, to explain with renewed clarity the concepts underlying drug treatment of psychiatric disorders. New neurotransmitter systems, new theories on schizophrenia, clinical advances in antipsychotic and antidepressant therapy, new coverage of attention deficit disorder, sleep disorders and drug abuse, and a new chapter on gender and sexual psychopharmacology--these are all features of this edition. The fully revised text is complemented by many new illustrations, instructive and entertaining as before, and enhanced to reflect new knowledge and topics covered for the first time. The illustrations and their captions may be used independently of the main text for a rapid introduction to the field or for review, and self-assessment tests follow each chapter. Even more, this will be the essential text for students, scientists, psychiatrists and other mental health professionals, enabling them to master the complexities of psychopharmacology, and plan sound treatment approaches based on current knowledge. A Teacher's Set of Essential Psychopharmacology, second edition, consists of the hardback book plus a Mac/PC compatible CD-ROM, which contains all the figures from the text in cleverly crafted PowerPoint® presentations in two versions: the complete sequence of more than 500 animated figures from the textbook, and the same images without animation. The CME credit for this book has been expired in April 2006.

I am a Masters Degree student in counseling and was introduced to Stahl's writings in a Counseling and Physiology course taught by an M.D. This book provides color diagrams with very lucid descriptions and explanations of how various chemical substances impact brain functioning. I bought the second edition because of the price difference but for my application this edition is more than sufficient. I wanted to understand the action of drugs (licit and illicit) at the level of neurotransmission in the brain. I also wanted to better understand the physiological aspects of phychological disorders such as bipolar. There is an entire chapter dedicated to depression and bipolar disorders.

While I do not subscribe to the "disease" model prevelant in biological psychiatry today I wanted to gain a better understanding of the alleged "chemical imbalance" often mentioned by people suffering from psychological disorders or by others who want to label a reason for the symptons they observe in loved ones. Having said that, there is no question that we are composed of cells and neurons that participate in neurochemical interactions that affect what goes on in our brain which in turn produces certain bodily and pshychological outcomes. This book provides answers to the questions of how all of that works as well as how medications work in treating symptoms of psychological disorders and addictions to substances.

Stahl's Essential Psychopharmacology is an excellent, informative tome on current medications.
That being said, the book utterly lacks any information on the differences in responses to these drugs along ethnic diversity lines, or gender differences, or interactions with commonly used herbs or supplements.
The topic of diversity and supplement usage is extremely relevant in today's world and knowledge of the these subjects will only increase our clients' comfort.

The new edition of Stahl's... is amazing. It keeps the same friendly and easy-to-read texts and figures, but is much more complete in its subjects.
I'm very glad to had adquired this book, no doubt its going to improve my understanding about neurobiology/psychopharmacology. For sure, an outstanding masterpiece!
