I expected much better..., 2005-11-16 From the back cover:
Room at the Inn by Marilyn Pappano
"Home for Christmas." Those words had never meant as much to Bryce as they did now. For the first time in years, he was back in Angel's Peak, living once again in his childhood home.
But the rambling old house was now an inn, and managed by Leah, with her beguiling ways and four wonderful children. Instant fatherhood was an appealing prospect, and marriage to Leah...that would be the best Christmas present of all!
Woman Hater by Diana Palmer
Everyone in the office described the boss's mysterious brother as a real woman hater. So when Nicole White had to travel with her employer to his brother's home in Montana, she was prepared for the worst.
What she found in Winthrop Christopher was a man whose distrust of women was as solid as the Montana mountains. Was it possible that at Christmas even mountains could be moved by love?
And my review:
I find that Marilyn Pappano's stories are either very good or ho-hum. This was one from the latter category. The story never seemed to "get started". I kept waiting for something interesting to happen, but nothing did. After pushing through the first hundred pages without encountering anything significant in either plot or character development, I gave up. One star.
The second story started off much better. At first, my only complaint was that the author was really bad for "head-hopping". It was distracting to read things through his point-of-view, then hers, then back to his, then hers and back again. Instead of feeling connected to the characters, this makes me feel like an outsider. These switches made it very hard to get drawn into the story. Also, I couldn't like him. He was just so bitter and cold and I couldn't see, apart from sexual chemistry, why Nicole (who was an absolute sweetheart) would be attracted to him. About 100 pages in I got to a ridiculous scene where the virgin woman is ready to give herself to a man who doesn't want a thing to do with her (apart from sleeping with her), even to the point of wanting to be pregnant by him without a word of emotional commitment! Sorry, but I don't find the doormat woman thing endearing at all. I stopped reading at this point and put the book into my donation pile. One star.
I don't understand how Silhouette could put out such a sub-standard product, when their "Silhouette Christmas Stories" collections are usually so good. Do yourself a favor and skip this one. There are much better Christmas romance anthologies out there.
